Star of Courage
Shortly after midnight on 17 March 1985, Ian Dart and Wayne Field entered a burning apartment in Nanaimo, British Columbia, to rescue an 18-month-old girl from a horrible death. Aware of the dangers, Wayne Field braved the thick smoke filling the long corridor and, groping his way, found the baby's bedroom. He seized the child and slowly made his way towards safety. Meanwhile, Ian Dart had entered the apartment and was also searching for the young victim. Advancing in the narrow band of air near the floor, he was soon blinded by smoke, dazed by the intense heat and forced to retreat. Undeterred, he re-entered and found Mr. Field who was crawling towards the exit. The baby was carried outside to helping hands.
