Dwayne Emery, S.C. Star of Courage At Swan Hills, British Columbia, on July 17, 1971, eleven-year-old Dwayne Emery risked his life trying to drive off a black bear which had attacked his younger brother. Three boys were playing together some distance from the Emery home when a black bear emerged from the forest. The smallest boy, unable to run fast enough to escape, was attacked. Young Dwayne Emery hurled rocks at the bear and approached close enough to grasp the animal by the hind paw. While Dwayne continued harassing and attempting to arrest the bear's progress, the victim was dragged into the trees. Meantime the alarm was raised and the boys' father followed their trail and shot the animal. In large part, it is through the courageous efforts of his older brother that the five-year-old, although seriously injured, survived.
