Harold Earle saved the life of his neighbour's three-year-old son during a fire on 15 March 1979. The boy was in the living-room where the fire started. When Mr. Earle appeared on the scene he searched for the child through blinding smoke. At one point he was nearly overcome and had to retreat outdoors, but once again he braved the smoke and, following the child's cries, found him on the floor and carried him out. In the process the rescuer suffered burns to hands and face.
