Kelly Dunn rescued a man from a basement apartment during a fire in the early hours of 14 September 1975. The man had fallen asleep while smoking and set fire to his bed. Mr. Dunn, the manager of the building, was alerted by another tenant and found smoke billowing from the victim's apartment. Taking an extinguisher, he entered the apartment and groped his way through the rooms. The victim was found overcome by the smoke lying on the bedroom floor. Mr. Dunn quickly seized him under the arms and dragged him outside. But for Mr. Dunn's brave intervention, the victim would almost certainly have been asphyxiated.
