On the afternoon of 30 June 1983, by his remarkable devotion to duty, bus driver Normand Dubé saved his passengers from a fiery death following a collision near Papinachois. Fire broke out on impact but Mr. Dubé, though shaken, maintained control and directed the passengers toward the back of the bus. In spite of a broken wrist, he opened a window and helped men and women crawl out of the wreckage. Then, groping his way up the aisle through blinding smoke, he searched for straggling passengers and urged them to exit. Satisfied that no one had been left behind, he retraced his footsteps and pulled himself to safety. Once outside, Mr. Dubé saw an unconscious woman lying near the rear wheels of the bus and carried her away from the burning fuel spreading on the pavement.
