In the afternoon of 1 February 1983, ten-year-old Tracey Provost saved her three-year-old brother from a fiery death. While watching television in the living-room with her brother, Tracey heard the sound of the smoke detector and went to investigate. She discovered flames spreading rapidly to the kitchen wall adjacent to the living-room. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, she returned to the living-room and took the boy on her back. By then the kitchen was an inferno but the kitchen door was the only means of escape. Ignoring the danger, Tracey carried her baby brother through the kitchen. Once he was safely out-of-doors, she ran to alert her parents working inside the barn. Tracey's stepfather unfortunately lost his life in an attempt to rescue his newborn daughter.
