On 29 July 1975, at the age of sixty-five, Margaret Pitkethly gave her life to save that of her daughter. The family had been collecting rock specimens in a quarry near Princeton, and the woman suddenly found herself in the path of a heavy boulder that became dislodged from the rock-face. Seeing her daughter frozen to the spot in her fear, Mrs. Pitkethly quickly pushed her out of harm's way. But the boulder hit the family van and then inflicted severe injuries on the rescuer, who died on the way to hospital.
