On June 14, 1986, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Miss Alison Parent was riding her bicycle in Wetland, Ontario, when she noticed smoke billowing from a house. Aware that the occupant of the house was an elderly man with limited sight, she approached the front door and called his name. Upon hearing him reply, she entered the house in an attempt to help him leave. Hampered by the heavy smoke, she crouched down and followed his voice as smoke limited her sight. She located him near the stove area of the kitchen huddled under a jacket, trying to phone for help. She had to forcibly remove him from the smoke-filled house as he was convinced that he could put out the fire on the stove by himself. Exiting the house, Miss Parent took the victim to a neighbour's house across the street to call the fire department. She had to physically restrain the man from re-entering his house as he was confused about the severity of the situation. The fire department arrived shortly and soon had the fire under control.
