On the evening of 31 March 1981 Steven Panteluk was driving a semi-trailer flat-bed truck northwards on a highway in the municipality of St. Andrews, Manitoba. At an intersection a car travelling west hit the rear part of the trailer and rolled into a ditch. Within minutes the car's fuel tank exploded. Though shaken by the accident, Mr. Panteluk ran to the blazing car, removed a woman from the passenger side and carried her to safety. The vehicle then burned too rapidly to make any further rescue attempt possible.
