On September 27, 1995, Maj. Bridge, a member of the British Army serving with the United Nations Protection Force in Croatia, rescued two colleagues after the vehicle in which the three were travelling struck an anti-tank mine. The blast destroyed the vehicle, leaving the three men unconscious and surrounded by unexploded mines. Upon regaining consciousness, Maj. Bridge administered aid to the badly-injured Canadian team leader, thus saving his life. He then led his other colleague, who was in a severe state of shock, through the minefield to safety. Maj. Bridge then re-entered the unmarked minefield, crawled back through the wreckage to the team leader, and brought him to safety. Throughout, he tried to calm and reassure the severely wounded men, who were later brought to the hospital, where they were successfully treated for their life-threatening injuries.
