Terrance Allan Collins saved his neighbour's two-year-old child from a fire which claimed two lives on 14 May 1977. Mr. Collins was awakened by a boy, aged eight, who announced that his mother and younger brother and sister were trapped in the fire. When he arrived on the scene the rescuer found the door locked and tried to call the younger boy to the bedroom window; but the child remained in his bed. Forced to climb through the window, Mr. Collins then inched his way through the smoke and found the child. The victim was taken outside through the narrow exit, and Mr. Collins then smashed the girl's bedroom window. Because of the intense heat and smoke, however, he could not get in, and nothing could be done to save the mother and daughter.
