On January 2, 1972, Edward Alexander Sokolowski saved the life of a ten-year-old boy who had fallen through the ice on the Humber at Downsview, Ontario. The boy had gone out onto the ice to attempt to rescue a dog when the ice gave way. Another boy who was his companion ran up the bank into the roadway and flagged down a bus driven by Edward Sokolowski. The rescuer slid down the steep embankment and waded into the stream, breaking the ice as he went and swam out to the victim. The boy was floating face down and the bus driver with difficulty managed to push the unconscious child to shore. A bystander helped them from the water and Mr. Sokolowski, applying artificial respiration, revived the child.
