Medal of Bravery
In the afternoon of 26 December 1981, 17-year-old Robert Green and James Snow, aged 19, both of Bishop's Falls, in Newfoundland, combined efforts to save their friend from certain drowning. James and his friend were playing hockey on the Exploits River, at the foot of the falls, when the latter fell through the ice. Unmindful of the obvious danger to himself, James inched his way along the frozen surface to the edge, where his friend was floundering, and extended his hockey stick. As he struggled to drag his friend out, the fragile ice gave way and he slipped into the freezing water, his head and shoulders submerged. Seeing their plight, Robert, who was on shore and about to join his two friends on the ice, hurried to their rescue, though wearing only one skate. Knowing full well that the surface was treacherous, he crawled to the edge of the hole, grabbed James' skates and pulled him out of the water. James then helped Robert and together they lifted the victim onto safer ice.
