Ten-year-old Cub Richard Cheeseman, on the evening of 30 April 1982, saved a five-year-old boy from almost certain drowning. The two were playing along the bank of Blue Culch Brook. The boy suddenly lost his footing and slipped into the icy waters. While the current swept him away, Richard ran along the bank until he found a spot where he could enter the water. Though not a good swimmer he reached the young victim moments before the latter would have been carried through a culvert. At considerable risk to himself, his strength nearly exhausted, Richard waded chest-deep while holding the semi-conscious boy and succeeded in reaching safety. He applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, then ran to the nearest street to summon help.
