With a resolve seldom found in a seven-year-old, Jonathan Carter saved an eight-year-old girl from drowning in the Souris River. Early on the afternoon of Sunday, 30 January 1983, several children were skating on the river when the ice suddenly gave way and the girl fell through. Hearing her cries for help, Jonathan dashed to her rescue while the other children remained behind. Because he knew that the surface was treacherous, he stretched over the thin ice, reached out to the girl and seized her arms. Then, struggling against the pull of her soaked clothing, Jonathan dragged her with much difficulty onto safer ice. There is no doubt that his quick action averted a tragedy.
