At approximately 10:30 p.m., on August 10, 1985, a man driving along Highway 40 toward Joliette, Quebec, lost control of his vehicle and hit one of the concrete pillars of a viaduct. The automobile, trapped between the pillar and the guardrail, burst into flames. Seeing the blazing vehicle, Mr. Normand Carrier immediately stopped his car and ran toward the scene of the accident. He saw an unconscious man inside the car and tried to pull him out through the car doors; however, they were jammed. Disregarding the increasing risk of an explosion, Mr. Carrier leaned through an open window, grabbed the victim and pulled him out. Another person helped him carry the victim to safety. After bandaging the man's injured arm as best he could, Mr. Carrier left the victim in the care of the people who had gathered at the scene and continued on his way. Without Mr. Carrier's assistance, the victim would have been burnt alive.
