On 27 May 1980 Sgt. Carpenter, without regard for his own safety, saved a colleague from serious injuries and possible death at Heuberg Camp, West Germany. Sgt. Carpenter, acting as Safety Officer on a grenade range, was supervising the throwing of fragmentation grenades. A soldier entered the training area after withdrawing the safety pin, dropped the grenade he was about to hurl. Sgt. Carpenter, realizing the imminent danger if an attempt was made to pick up the live grenade, shouted to the soldier to jump over the front wall of the bay. When the latter hesitated, he removed him forcibly and followed him to safety. Seconds later the grenade exploded. Sgt. Carpenter's quick thinking and courageous action set a fine example to all his colleagues.
