Constable Peter Carberry, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
In London, Ontario on August 1 1970, under the threat of gunfire, Cst. Peter Carberry went to the aid of a wounded 15-year-old boy. A mentally disturbed man, shooting more or less at random from the window of a hotel room, wounded the young boy who was sitting in a station wagon at the curb. When Cst. Carberry arrived on the scene he directed the boy's father, who was crouching beside the car, to open the rear door and then dash to safety. During a lull in the firing, the constable ran to the car, climbed into the back and over the driver's seat and succeeded in reversing the car to a point out of the line of fire. After driving the boy to hospital, he returned to the hotel and from a position outside the gunman's room persuaded him to surrender.
