Ramon Campodonico, S.C. Star of Courage In the early hours of the morning of 23 September 1982, displaying a great courage and a willingness to risk his life for a perfect stranger, Ramon Campodonico of Nun's Island, in Montreal, saved a man from a fiery death. After the victim had lost control of his northbound vehicle near the Champlain Bridge, it bounced off the embankment, landed on its roof and caught fire. Travelling south on the highway, Mr. Campodonico stopped his car, ran to the scene of the accident and found the unconscious driver trapped inside his vehicle, surrounded by flames. Without hesitating and undeterred by heavy smoke and intense heat, he crawled through the broken rear window. Unable to move the injured driver, even with sustained effort, Mr. Campodonico stretched his head and shoulders dangerously close to the searing flames and untangled the man's right foot from the wreckage, aware that the vehicle could blow up at anytime. As he was pulling the victim from the vehicle, another motorist came to his assistance and they carried him to safety moments before the expected explosion occurred.
