Fifteen-year-old Steven William Campbell saved the life of his companion who fell into an underground brush fire in Kamloops, on October 22, 1973. The youths observed smoke escaping in a local park and investigated. When they had approached to within a few feet of the smouldering sight, the soil collapsed beneath one of the boys, trapping him shoulder deep in fire. Taking immediate action, Steven Campbell reached inside the hole and took a firm grip of his mate. Braving the intense heat, he lifted the severely injured victim from the cell of flames and extinguished the fire on his clothes. Had it not been for Steven Campbell's concerted response, the other young man's life would almost certainly have been lost.
