In the early hours of 24 March 1981 Paul Butcher and Steve Ditmore saw from the street that fire had broken out in a third-floor apartment in that city. Without breathing apparatus and well aware of the risks involved, they immediately went upstairs. Mr. Butcher entered the smoke-filled living-room where by touch he found a man who was dragging a boy with great difficulty. Meanwhile Mr. Ditmore returned with a flashlight, and once the rescuer had reached the door he carried the child to the landing. The two men re-entered the burning apartment to ascertain that there were no other occupants whose lives were in danger.
