Twelve-year-old Michael Bruggemann saved the lives of two boys who had fallen through the ice on Frenchman's Bay. Late on the afternoon of 5 February 1983, while playing hockey on the bay with his younger brother, Michael heard faint cries from two youngsters floundering in open water some thirty metres away. Clutching his hockey stick, he raced to the edge of the hole where the two kept breaking the ice in their frantic efforts to stay above water. Undeterred by the perils of rescuing two boys as big as he, he crawled across the icy waters and extended his stick to one victim and pulled him out. By then Michael had nearly exhausted his strength, but again using his hockey stick he turned to the other boy and pulled him onto solid ice.
