On March 23, 1980 Cst. André Boivin saved a man who had jumped from the Cummings Bridge into the icy waters of the Rideau River. When he arrived at the scene, Cst. Boivin removed his clothing and without any hesitation, jumped into the swollen river. Holding onto an overhanging tree branch he grabbed the distraught man who was being swept downstream. Both slipped underwater for a brief moment and on resurfacing, Cst. Boivin had to let go of the branch because of the fast-flowing current. He managed to keep afloat and to steer himself and the victim towards the shore where both men were helped to safety.
