Chris Ann Bishop, aged fifteen, rescued three younger brothers from a fire which destroyed their house in the early hours of 16 September 1976. She was wakened by her mother, who, however, failed to reach her children on the second floor. The girl raced to the boys' bedroom and roused her brothers, then led the two youngest to the top of the stairs. A third joined them, and she pushed the children down moments before the stairs were sealed off by fire. Finding blankets, she returned to the others but could not enter their room. With fire all around her, Chris Ann was finally forced to jump from a second-floor window but continued in her efforts to attempt to save two others. Shortly thereafter the whole house was on fire and the two remaining children could not be saved.
