George Bird was crossing Wapeweka Lake with a friend late in the evening of December 6, 1983, when their skidoo broke through the ice. Mr. Bird managed to climb out of the hole but his friend could not. Despite the numbing cold and the risk of again falling in, Mr. Bird hung over the ice- edge, struggling to pull his friend out. As minutes passed, the task became more difficult, but he persisted, finally dragging his friend to firm ice.
