On the night of 5 March 1981, eighteen-year-old Michel Bilodeau saw smoke billowing out of his neighbour's kitchen and hurried to the rescue. Hearing the man groaning inside the burning house, Michel entered but thick smoke forced him back. Despite the seriousness and intensity of the fire he re-entered, found the victim semi-conscious on the floor some three metres from the doorway and carried him out. Michel made several attempts to reach three other members of the family at the risk of his own safety but realized that nothing further could be done.
