The prompt and courageous action of Frank Bennett saved a thirteen-year-old girl from a fiery death. On the afternoon of 4 December 1982, the young girl was inside her father's service station when an explosion occurred. Mr. Bennett dashed from the gas bar to the entrance door and saw the girl surrounded by fire. The building was an inferno but he determined to rescue her. Seeing no other means of escape, Mr. Bennett urged the girl to run through the flames towards him. She became frightened midway and stopped, her hair and clothing catching fire. With utter disregard for his own safety, Mr. Bennett rushed forward, grabbed the girl and pulled her outside, snuffing the flames on her body with his hands. He sustained second and third degree burns to his face and hands.
