Capt. Lorne Bakke of CFB Chatham, New Brunswick, saved an eleven-year-old boy from drowning in the Miramichi River at Chatham on 19 June 1976. The youth had been caught in the current when he had ventured too far from shore. His cries attracted the attention of Capt. Bakke, who was collecting driftwood. The officer swam to his rescue, but the boy sank below the surface when his rescuer was within ten yards of him. Capt. Bakke had to dive to reach him. He then pulled the youth to the surface, revived him by mouth to mouth resuscitation, and brought him to shore.
