On the evening of 15 May 1980, George Smith was involved in an accident in which his truck collided with a car that caught fire and trapped the driver inside. Without concern for his own safety and in spite of a heart ailment, Mr. Smith ran to the car and pulled the burning body of the victim out of the window on the driver's side. There was danger of an explosion at any time. But for his prompt and courageous action the man would have perished within seconds, as the vehicle was completely destroyed before the fire department arrived; but he later recovered from third-degree burns.
