On June 18, 1994, Mr. Schultz helped rescue six people from a burning house in Oliver, British Columbia. While driving by, he and his friend, Mr. Szajko, noticed the house on fire, stopped and ran to see if they could help. While assisting five of the occupants out, they learned there was a woman still inside. Unable to see through the dense smoke, Mr. Schultz began crawling around the living room to look for her. The smoke and heat forced him outside, while Mr. Szajko continued the search. When his friend called for help, Mr. Schultz entered the burning house again and assisted in pulling the severely burned woman outside.
