Shortly after midnight on June 24, 1987, Mr. Irnie single-handedly captured a man who had just robbed a service station in Aldergrove, British Columbia. Driving past the station, Mr. Irnie happened to notice a masked man inside. He stopped his vehicle a short distance along the road, got out, saw the robber exit the store and begin running in his direction. Hiding behind his vehicle, Mr. Irnie waited until the suspect passed, then tackled him from the rear, forced him to the ground and held him in a bear hug until the police arrived a few moments later. Mr. Irnie reacted with boldness and quick presence of mind, attacking an unknown man who was, in fact, a previous offender and had been armed with a knife.
