Medal of Bravery
Unusually large waves and a strong undertow at Kennington Cove, Nova Scotia, on the afternoon of August 21, 1986, resulting as an after-math of Hurricane Charlie, caused three young men swimming there to experience difficulties and call for help. Disregarding the peril to themselves, Ben Bated and David Lovett responded, entering from one end of the beach, while Robert Canova and Michael Thompson entered from the other end. The rescuers assisted the exhausted victims physically and also exhorted them to greater efforts with encouraging words and instructions. Despite entanglements in seaweed and crippling fatigue, all concerned made it safely back to shore with the exception of Mr. Thompson.
