On July 21, 1994, while participating in competitive cycling, fourteen-year-old Keegan McLevin rescued a four-year-old boy from the Red Deer River in Red Deer, Alberta. Reacting to screams that a child was drowning and seeing the victim about 10 metres away from the shore, Keegan plunged into the river fully dressed and swam to the child who was floating under the surface. Despite the strong current, the teenager grabbed hold of the victim and swam back to the edge of the river, nearly 15 to 20 metres downstream, until he was able to stand and carry the limp child to shore. One of the parents assisted with first aid treatment until the paramedics arrived.
