At approximately 1:00 a.m. on August 1, 1985, in Summerside, Nova Scotia, security guard Kevin MacRae, while on duty observed two men running toward the wharf. He saw one of them plunge into the water. Learning from the other man, still standing on the wharf, that his brother was trying to drown himself, Mr. MacRae notified the police for assistance. He quickly removed his equipment and plunged into the water. Bystanders found two life preserver rings and tossed them into the water. Mr. MacRae had trouble controlling the victim but, by getting his own arm in a ring, kept him buoyant. They were in the water about 45 minutes and, during this time, two bystanders brought a boat alongside and pulled the victim onto the backboard. He was then taken to the hospital.
