On September 24, 1988, Cst. Troy Duane Gross rescued an unconscious man from an overturned tanker truck near Wainright, Alberta. Gasoline flowed from the damaged tanker, yet Cst. Gross proceeded to remove the windshield from the cab, creating the only available opening, and turned off the ignition. He then climbed into the cab and, with the help of newly-arrived ambulance attendants and a fellow constable, he began to manoeuvre the driver out through the opening. At one point the victim became lodged in the opening but was eventually pulled from the wreck and brought to safety.
