On the night of February 7, 1988, at Shannon Park, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, then Cpl. Bayes was awakened by a smoke alarm and, having noticed flames and sparks originating from a top floor apartment of his building, he and his wife alerted all known residents. Cpl. Bayes then returned to the building convinced that someone was trapped in the burning apartment but was forced to leave because of the smoke. He entered again with the assistance of two servicemen but again the three were forced to retreat. Cpl. Bayes was determined to return once more and was successful in forcing the door open and rescuing an unconscious and badly-burned victim.
