On June 15, 1987, Pierre Caissie attempted to rescue a man from drowning in Livingston Lake, in New Brunswick. A group of young people decided to go for a swim after having spent the day organizing a camp for boys and girls. Suddenly, one of the swimmers started struggling after having become caught in a whirlpool. Mr. Caissie jumped in to help the victim, managed to grab him but was unable to exit the pool due to the steep and slippery bank. Both men disappeared and did not resurface.
