Early in the morning of February 21, 1988, Mark Haley rescued his friend when a fire engulfed most of the main floor of a house in Cornwall, Ontario. The four occupants were asleep when the fire broke out, but he smell of smoke awakened one of them, who in turn woke the others to escape the intensifying flames. Once outside, Mr. Haley realized that one of the main floor residents had not yet escaped. He ran back into the house through the smoke and dragged a semi-conscious man from his bed and out of the burning house.
