On the afternoon of August 21, 1988, Susan Melodie-Joy Howard rescued a man from drowning in Kelso Lake, near Milton, Ontario. He and his friend, neither of whom were wearing life jackets, were thrown into the water when their canoe overturned some thirty metres from shore. Ms. Howard, watching form shore, could see that while one man was clinging to the overturned canoe, the other appeared to be in serious difficulty. Although afraid that she might be pulled under by the much larger man, she immediately dived into the lake and swam out to help him. Passing one arm around his neck, she held his head above water and towed him back to shore where others waited to help.
