On October 15, 1989, at Middle Cove, Newfoundland, Mr. Mokry participated in the attempted rescue of four people. While he was on a pleasure outing body surfing with some of his diving students, the water conditions worsened and soon three of the surfers were in trouble. Mr. Mokry brought one of them to safety and directed his assistant to help in the rescue of another. Meanwhile he returned to advise the remaining surfer to ride the next wave in to the beach. Unfortunately, the surfer was unable to and was next seen floating face down. The Coast Guard authorities had arrived by this time so Mr. Mokry swam out to the rescue boat to advise them of the victim's location. After he had returned to the beach, the fast rescue craft capsized, throwing the three men aboard into the waters. Mr. Mokry entered the water yet again in an attempt to save one of the men. Tragically, the three Coast Guard officers and the surfer did not survive.
