On April 29, 1990, Master Gallichon, then twelve years old, rescued a friend from the icy water of a tributary of Lac Charles in La Tabatière, Quebec. The two boys were playing at the edge of the stream when one of them slipped and fell into the water. Dragged away by the current, the boy managed to grab hold of an ice floe. Master Gallichon immediately jumped into the water to give him a hand, but could not pull him out. Hoisting himself out of the water, he spotted an oar on the bank. He seized it, returned to the ice floe and succeeded in hauling his friend to the bank with the oar.
