Medal of Bravery
On January 20, 1990, Bernie Buschke and Rory Charles Goddard participated in the rescue of four people from Sparrow Lake at Kilworthy, Ontario. Mr. Goddard was snowmobiling on the lake with friends when two of the vehicles went through the ice, dumping him, his girlfriend, her father and her daughter into the water. Mr. Buschke, observing the accident from his home, grabbed a ladder and ran over to help the woman from the water while Mr. Goddard pushed the little girl to her. Mr. Buschke extended the ladder to Mr. Goddard, but it broke through the ice and Mr. Buschke fell into the freezing waters. He pulled himself out and helped Mr. Goddard, who was holding onto the unconscious older man. As they began to drag the older man across the ice, it gave way again, returning all three to the water. Messrs. Buschke and Goddard pulled themselves out and dragged the victim to the shore. Tragically, he did not survive.
