Medal of Bravery
Early in the morning of December 19, 1988, Leslie Charles Armitage and Carl Douglas George risked their lives to rescue a woman from a burning mobile home outside Comox, British Columbia. Mr. Armitage discovered a fire in his residence and ran outside to get a fire extinguisher. When he returned, the flames were coming out the front door, trapping the woman inside. After hearing her cries for help, he re-entered the trailer only to be hit by a fireball and knocked unconscious. In the meantime, the woman had escaped through a window and Carl Douglas George had arrived on the scene. Mr. George radioed for help and, unsuccessful in his attempts to enter the trailer, made a hole in the door with a chain-saw and cleared a passage. He was able to squeeze through the narrow opening and, after three attempts, lifted the unconscious Mr. Armitage and brought him to safety.
