On the night of January 8, 1988 Mr. Donald Buchner rescued his neighbour from a house fire in Kelowna, British Columbia. Noticing smoke coming out of the back door, Mr. Buchner ran to the house and, learning that someone was inside, hurried to fetch a flashlight. He rushed back to the house and crawled on his stomach into the smoke-filled kitchen where he found the victim and dragged him outside. Informed that another person was trapped inside, Mr. Buchner again entered the burning building and crawled along the hallway to the front room, calling to the victim. Overcome by the intense heat and smoke, he was forced to retreat just as firefighters arrived to take over the rescue effort.
