Late in the morning of August 13, 1987, at Cousin's Shore in Park Corner, Prince Edward Island, Michael Charles Cheverie rescued two sisters from drowning. The sisters, floating on their air mattresses in the choppy water, had begun drifting further away from shore. Realizing they would have difficulty returning, they started to swim towards the beach against strong waves and an undertow. Tiring quickly, they began to call for help and Mr. Cheverie and his friend responded to their cries. When Mr. Cheverie reached the older sister, he pushed her towards shore and then immediately swam out to the younger sister, who was submerging and resurfacing. He towed her to waist-level water and then returned to the older sister to help her to shore.
