On August 26, 1988, firefighter Robert Bevington rescued an American tourist who was about to be swept over Niagara Falls. Thrown from her boat into the Niagara River, the victim was tiring quickly. Called to the rescue, firefighter Bevington tied a bowline around his waist and entered the water, while his partner held the other end of the rope. Due to the fast-moving water, both firefighter Bevington and the victim risked being pulled around a break-wall or into the powerhouse turbines. After great difficulty in locating the victim, firefighter Bevington managed to grab onto the collar of her life jacket and the two were pulled to shore.
