On July 24, 1990, fifteen-year-old David James helped rescue his grandfather after a mountaineering accident on the Howe Sound Crest Trail, north of Vancouver, British Columbia. While descending a steep incline, the older man lost his balance on loose shale and fell. Traversing the dangerous seventy-degree rock face, David found his grandfather, unconscious and bleeding, a few hundred metres below. He wrapped his jacket around the man's injured head, then hiked through water to a more open area where he was able to radio for help. Dense fog delayed the rescue, forcing David to remain overnight on the cold and precarious mountainside. Once found, David directed the rescuers to his grandfather.
