At about midnight on July 12, 1992, Mr. Gagnon rescued a child from a burning house in Oshawa, Ontario. After calling for assistance, he was told that a child and an adult were still inside. He ran to the child's bedroom window and smashed it with a concrete block. With the help of a bystander, he was able to enter through the window. He groped his way to the infant's bed, picked up the child and passed him out the window to his mother. Mr. Gagnon then dove out the window and was treated for his injuries while firefighters rescued the second victim.
