On February 1, 1990, in L'Annonciation, Quebec, fourteen-year-old Benoît Houle rescued a woman lying on thin ice on the Rouge river. While crossing the bridge, he heard someone screaming and immediately climbed down onto the ice. He crawled toward the victim and attempted in vain to calm her down. He was preparing to drag the victim to shore when the ice gave way. However, Benoît succeeded in hoisting himself out of the water and towing the woman to safety.
