Medal of Bravery
On February 5, 1995, Joseph Flinn, Jamie McMillan and Pascal Routledge saved a man from being drowned in the Atlantic Ocean at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. As they sat watching a spectacular storm, they saw a powerful wave wash over a couple, and knock them against the rocks then into the freezing tidal pool. The backwash carried the woman through a large crevice and into the open ocean. Messrs. Flinn and Routledge raced towards the man who was clambering over the rocks frantically trying to go after his friend. With his foot wedged in a crack, the force of a strong breaker broke his leg. Drenched by the cold ocean spray, the two rescuers inched their way forward on the slippery rocks until they reached the distraught man. Racing for time before the next wave, they were joined by Mr. McMillan who helped lift, then carry the injured victim out of danger. The body of the woman was recovered twelve days later.
